Artist’s Statement December 2024
My latest works are made in response to recent travels, including visits to Iceland, Italy, Portugal and Vietnam. I prefer to work in situ and to reflect the time, place, weather, and experience of the moment, underpinned by some elements of landscape.
I work rapidly in watercolours, and use purpose made fold out sketchbooks that enable me to work on a large scale in situ. Where this is difficult I work on a smaller scale or in standard sketchbooks, and work up either larger works or woodcuts back in the studio. The large watercolours are fluid and sometimes remain purely abstract, whereas of its nature print gives the opportunity for a more focused and graphic image, which is reflected in the woodcuts.
