Having lived in some of England's most picturesque regions, including the Cotswolds, Lancashire, and Cornwall, Caryn now lives in Sudbury, Suffolk, near the River Stour.
Caryn works primarily with watercolour, charcoal, and ink. She is a self-taught, emerging artist.
Her creative journey began in print and design, leading to a love of typography and hand lettering. She enjoyed the flow of writing characters with a calligraphy pen and uses a dip pen and ink in her art today. She feels it's both contemporary and ancient at the same time.
Other roles have included crafting wizards in a pottery and running a signwriting business before moving into digital graphic design. After being made redundant in 2019, she took a leap of faith and decided to dedicate herself to art full time, she has been honing her skills, experimenting, and exhibiting since then.
Caryn is drawn to the unpredictability of watercolour, the way pigments flow on wet paper, and how layering colours can create depth and contrast while preserving the luminosity of the white paper beneath.
Caryn’s creative process is immersive and guided by her emotional response to the spaces around her. Her work depicts urban and rural landscapes and how they interact, sometimes focusing on intimate, close-up views and at others stepping back to capture a broader perspective.
As she paints she imagines the history of the buildings, the landscapes, their previous and present inhabitants. She invites viewers to engage with their stories and discover their own connections within her work.
