Biography/Details

Caroline Mackintosh is a largely self-taught contemporary landscape painter living and working in Suffolk. Her semi-abstract style is concerned with capturing the shapes and lines formed in the landscape, rather than a literal representation of place. Her inspiration comes largely from the marshes and estuaries that surround her, but also from travels further afield.

Drawn to the dramatic lines, strong shapes and vivid colours formed by shifts in light in the landscape her work acts as a visual diary, in particular walks taken. Smaller works in mixed media are formed and they, along with photographs and memories, are used to develop larger works, enabling me her further explore colour, shape, texture and abstraction.

Having studied to foundation level at Norwich Art School (now Norwich University of the Arts) and for a BA in Development Studies at the University of East Anglia, she lived in Southern Ireland for several years, before returning to England to train as a primary school teacher. She taught in various schools and travelled widely, before moving to the Suffolk countryside to renovate a house by a marsh and raise her family of four boys.

Later she specialised in teaching art in local primary schools and trained other teachers in the delivery of the art curriculum. In 2021 Caroline gave up teaching to focus entirely on her own art practice.

She is a member of Southwold Art Circle, Suffolk Open Studios and was shortlisted for The Sir John Hurt Art Prize in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
