Lost masterpiece comes to light

Allan Williams' lost masterpiece comes to light!

A painting SOS Committee member Allan Williams created back when he was still a student in Wolverhampton in the 1970s, has just sold at Sotheby's (for £500)...

Fireplace, oil on canvas, painted approx. 1973 (private collection)"I took the painting to the Portal Gallery in London. They liked the painting and kept it on a sale or return basis (whilst I was in the gallery, the actor Michael Hordern came in to browse).

I went off to Canada for two years to do my Master of Fine Arts degree. When I returned in 1981, whilst visiting a friend in London, I popped into the gallery to find out what happened to my painting. It had been sold (I think it was for the princely sum of £175). That, I thought was that, until I was contacted by someone from Sotheby's in November last year, wanting to verify the provenance, and to say that my painting, "Fireplace" was going to be part of an auction in March of the estate of the late Stanley J Seeger who was a well known, eccentric, millionaire Art collector, (see link below to obituary in NY Times).

The exhibition/auction was called "1000 Ways Of Seeing" which took place in London on 4/5 March. Mine was Lot: 545.

Its strange to think that amongst all the Picasso's and fabulous antiques was a painting by yours truly!" Allan Williams
