About me and my work
I am an artist who is inspired by the living form, colour and texture. I came to art later in life after leaving a career in nursing to live in India for three years. It was during this time that I first picked up a paint brush, so inspired by the colour and scenes around me. I worked with an Indian artist who taught me to draw and paint; it was a wonderful time. On my return to England I set up and still run a smallholding, where I have a variety of animals who are a constant inspiration to me. I love wildlife, fauna and flora and down on the farm there is no shortage of this at all!
I love to try to catch the personality and movement of the animals in my drawings and prints. I still think India influences me through the colours I like to use.
I start my process with drawings and photographs, then play with the image to find the essence of what I wish to communicate. The printing process can start from there, mainly wood cutting although I also enjoy drypoint etching or collagraph printing.
When working with wood I mainly construct my image through the reduction process, which can take anything from 3-6 weeks to complete. One block is used, and cut away after each colour is added to the print. This is why I work in small editions, as all prints in the run have to be printed at the same time.
I love to make images from dry point etching, as this is very close to the drawn image, and can display the energy of the subject freely.
Latterly I have returned to painting, using techniques such as collage, cropped images and abstraction to further reflect my interest in the environment.
I recently studied fine art at Post Graduate level at Norwich University of Art
